Scott Sean White - Days Are Long

Self-released
****1/2
One of the finest, most searching songwriters of the day, Scott Sean White brings tremendous sophistication to his third album. Deft, prose poem-like songs: an illuminating humanity is absolutely key. A most eloquent exploration of universal themes. A gorgeous, intimate collection of ten musical snapshots, the lyrics sparkle with an incisive blend of sentiment and clarity, and he matches them with music that pushes more restlessly than ever against the constraints of the song form. Each song feels carefully crafted, with each note and cymbal strike designed for the most emotional impact. The graceful arrangements and the pristine production of Dave Brainard ensure that the results are lovely, while the gorgeous purity of Scott’s voice glides elegantly above it all. You’ll want to stroll through these at a leisurely pace and let them soak in thoroughly.
Scott’s own relationships, life experiences and curveballs make up much of the album’s lyrical terrain, allowing him to explore and explain his own discoveries from asking the bigger questions to a new generation. By Heart sheds some previous insecurities and accepts being himself is the only way to live one’s life. It’s fitting, then, that one of the loveliest songs on the album offers gentle encouragement to listeners to likewise let their real selves shine, even when it’s hard. The track’s structure provides listeners with a laid-back comfort song enhanced by gentle Dobro and Victoria Rudd’s exquisite harmonies, that ring through your mind long after the sound fades away. He is wrestling with his inner demons with Here To Stay, one of the harder-edged songs. Here again, he proves the point that often, all it takes is a knowing perspective to lead to remarkable results.
The glory of great writing is the way it can make those age-old experiences resonate like new, or present under-represented perspectives in unique ways. Everyone who is a parent will get Hold Your Own. The song’s rhythms mimic the circular, interior thought patterns common to any life stage of quiet incubation, where a person’s focus turns inward to process and manifest major change that parenthood brings. Warm, unassuming and endearingly wistful, he takes comfort in intimacy with a lover in Days Are Long. It’s quite a lovely and thoughtful song, beautifully relayed by Scott, with an extra tasty musical arrangement. He also excels in conveying tales of intriguing individuals and even inanimate objects, and on tracks like Piano For Sale, and Castle In Kentucky, he shares his storytelling skills with a commitment and credibility that finds him offering empathy for the subjects of his songs and keeping his connection intact. Both offer perfect illustrations, each a swaying mid-tempo ballad that addresses and reels in the listener with obvious intent.
Each of these ten songs is a highlight in its own right and repeated plays reveal new nuances and flavours that will delight real music fans. It is always stilling to hear musicians working with a form they have fully understood and mastered ... played as if there is no barrier between heart and instrument. Scott Sean White proves that there is still a place for thoughtful, carefully crafted music within the country music pantheon. Listeners who appreciate undiluted heartfelt music with meaningful words are advised to set aside 40 minutes in their schedules, lay back, and enjoy this sonic cure for the jones. (what ails you)
