Libby Koch & Michael O'Connor - Gulf Coast Duets

Coastal Bend Records

****

Both Libby Koch and Michael O’Connor are veteran songwriters and performers with solid releases behind them. Though they have occasionally performed together, they are not a regular duet team. The seed for this album was planted in Scotland when Michael was performing Bernadine, a song he’d co-written with Adam Wright. Libby, who was also on the show, unexpectedly joined him on stage to sing along with him. Both singers were pleasantly surprised how well it worked. Some months later found them with Grammy-winning studio guru and pedal steel maestro John Macy in his Rockport, Texas Macy’s Coastal Bend Studios working with no expectations or rules to record this album. The result is a record that aptly captures the diversity of the songwriters while showcasing a selection of songs uniquely different from either of their solo work. Contrasting voices that harmonise to perfection, superlative instrumental work, and songs both new and old, yet all somehow familiar and timeless. Just the way those old duet records by Porter & Dolly, Conway & Loretta and George & Melba used to sound. Harmonies—vocal and musical—story the songs, rendering them almost as late-night kitchen table talks that loosely follow a fictional Gulf Coast couple through falling in love, falling apart, and finding one another again. Quiet yet powerfully striking, the album is an impressive collection from two artists perfectly in tune with each other.

These 10 songs have a distinct lived-in quality to them. Even the opening track, Bernadine, has the aura of cracking open a beer after a long, hard day. An album that seemingly floats on air, the soundscapes are a meditative cull to the world’s wild racket, a transmutation to anger, a quiet to the reckoning. Easy-going and twangy, that swings between tender ballads and rambling reflections, all with expressive voices at the centre. These songs have the warmth of a gentle ray of sunshine, perfectly capturing the essence of the Gulf Coast. Ain’t Gonna Stop Me glides forward on a typical blend of melodic and classic country guitar tracks, crafting a palpable, moving soundscape. While Michael’s vocal is gritty and wise, Libby’s is lighter and more hopeful, in this conciliatory love tune that is perfectly pitched for a Texas dancehall. Wrapped in melancholy, In Another Time And Place is a sad heartbreaker, with Michael crooning over a steady guitar strum and lonesome pedal steel lines. Libby adds haunting harmonies to the reflective late-night vibe of this introspective song.

One More Song is the kind of bluesy, laid-back groover that is perfect for reflection as the sun goes down after a restless day. Too Late is equal parts regret and sweetness, but the result is absolutely gentle and lovely. The swooning You Again has a lounge vibe, almost dipping into jazzy territory with some wondrous guitar noodling, while Wrecked has a hazier, organic, earthy vibe running through both lyrics and music. The Texas pair have selected a particularly choice duo of covers, though the beauty of Nanci Griffith’s Gulf Coast Highway is especially revelatory. Mostly true to the melody of the original, they slow it down, tangle their voices tightly together, and gift the listener a kind of love song that feels sweet, but not saccharine. They weave a lattice of acoustic guitar over ethereal pedal steel for this beautifully captivating rendition. Guy Clark’s Boats To Build is another great example, as it is played at a slower relaxed pace than other versions that I have heard over the years. Their tender acoustic guitars’ warmth snaking around a Dobro slide undergird the delicately shared vocal duet and exquisite harmonies.

The album ends much like it begins, with Having A Ball evincing an enviable lack of anxiety emphasising the value of imperfection and an honest love. It’s part vaudeville, part country swing, and always all acoustic, with finger-picked guitar and sweet pedal steel. A near-perfect male-female duet that is a fun invite for a singalong. GULF COAST DUETS is a terrific album, displaying a refreshing sound, when entwined with their keen songwriting abilities, and easy-on-the-ear vocal interaction.
